The Walking Wild Card

Tyler, the Creator, a rapper known for his standout music, is a walking wild card. He is best known for his albums CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST, Flower Boy, and IGOR.

Most of his fans are not only surprised by his sexuality, but also that he stays clean.

Unlike some other rappers, Tyler is not recovering addict. He distances himself from drugs and alcohol. After experiencing weed twice as a kid, he decided it was “not for him” and he would not use addictive substances.

Tyler also thinks that he has an addictive character. This knowledge of his addictive personality influences his sobriety as well.

He fears that he would be ‘in a bad place’ if he enjoyed drugs.

I’m in a financial place where I could enable it myself, and I don’t ever want to be that guy.
— Tyler, the Creator

He bans others from using these substances while working in his studio. He says that he wants to ‘work’ and not ‘good-off’. It upsets him that some of his collaborators do not choose to take it as seriously as he does. One time, he violently knocked a blunt out of someone’s hand and told them that it was a distraction.

ALONG WITH MANY OTHERS, HE VIEWS USING DRUGS AS A DISTRACTION FROM REAL LIFE.

In an interview, he said the following:

Why haven’t you wrestled a tiger? I don’t know. I just don’t want to drink.
I know that I don’t want to be that drunk guy. But I do know I want to hit a jump on a dirt-bike. I can look at that and say: ‘I want to do that.’ I’ve never seen anyone drunk, like, ‘Damn, I want to be that.’ So, I guess I just naturally got it pushed into my head that I have no reason to go over there and get f***ing drunk.
— Tyler, the Creator

Tyler had to answer the question about his sobriety in this way because it’s considered out of the ordinary to choose sobriety.

The fact that he does not desire to participate in substance abuse is viewed as abnormal and strange.

This is a problem.

Tyler is a prime example of someone who is extremely successful, unique, and sober. He lives a fulfilled and entertaining life without drugs or alcohol.
